I prefer to use hardwoods that come from around my home in Allithwaite, Cumbria - oak, ash, elm, fruit woods (apple, damson, cherry), laburnum and yew. I'll have some holly soon from a neighbouring garden. Old tables, roofing beams, chairs, piano keys etc have provided non-local woods like pitch pine, teak, beech, mahogany and ebony.
I love the use of local hardwoods which along with it being hand-made by a local craftsman makes this hand-made furniture so sustainable. The grain is beautiful too. Objects of beauty for the home while also demonstrating one’s commitment to a sustainable future and support for a local economy.
