The sculptures I am making at the moment are usually raku glazed, a low fired process which involves taking the red hot pieces out of the kiln and plunging them into sawdust. Depending on the glaze this gives unpredictable results which I feel enhances the look of the work.
For larger pieces I use local brick shale which fires to a warm terracotta. It is used to make bricks and, if proper drainage is provided, has good weatherability. It is an excellent medium for external displays.
